The US has a new head of cyber security, amid concerns about the Bush administration`s commitment to protecting computer networks from attack.

The post was left vacant by the sudden resignation of Amit Yoran a week ago.

The new acting head of the National Cyber Security Division is Andy Purdy, the former deputy director. Mr. Purdy has been a member of the organization since it was set up in September 2003.

The division has a staff of about 60 people and a budget of about $80m. Its task is to work out how to protect US networks from disruption by the viruses, worms and hack attacks that have become commonplace.

부시 행정부의 컴퓨터 네트워크를 공격으로부터 보호하기 위한 노력에 대한 우려가 일고 있는 가운데, 미국이 새로운 사이버 보안 최고 담당자를 선임했다.

이 자리는 일주일 전 아미트 요란이 돌연 사임하면서 공석으로 남아있었다.

국립 사이버 보안국의 새로운 최고 담당자는 전 부국장인 앤디 퍼디이다. 퍼디는 2003년 9월 이 부서가 생긴 이래로 쭉 이 곳에서 활동해 왔다.

사이버 보안국은 60여 명의 직원과 8천만 달러의 예산으로 유지되고 있다. 이 부서가 맡은 역할은 현재 만연하고 있는 바이러스와 웜, 그리고 만연한 해킹 공격으로 인한 피해로부터 미국의 네트워크를 보호하는 방안을 마련하는 것이다.
