　When police officers spot a crime suspect, they have to multitask in order to pursue him or her. They have to turn on the flashing lights, turn on the siren, turn on the video camera, and pick up the radio to report where they are and that they’re in pursuit of a suspect.

　Now, by simply saying the word “pursuit”, officers can keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the suspect. At least police in New Hampshire can, thanks to a voice-recognition program called Project 54. A computer in the car automatically performs all of these tasks upon hearing that word from the officer.

　Police have been using these ‘smart cars’ for two years, since the University of New Hampshire developed the software.

　경찰이 용의자를 발견하여 이 용의자를 추적하기 위해서는 여러 가지 일을 동시에 해야만 한다. 즉, 플래시 라이트를 켜고, 사이렌을 울려야 하며, 비디오 카메라를 작동시키는 동시에 무전기를 들어 그들의 현위치와 용의자를 추적 중이라는 사실을 알려야만 한다.

　그러나, 경찰관들이 이제는 ‘추적’이라는 단어만 말하고는 손은 운전대에 계속 두고 용의자를 눈에서 놓치지 않고 쫓을 수 있게 되었다. 적어도 뉴햄프셔의 경찰들은 이렇게 할 수 있는데, 이 모든 것이 ‘Project 54’라는 음성인식 프로그램 덕분이다. 경찰관들이 ‘추적’이라고 말하는 즉시, 차량에 장착된 컴퓨터가 이 위에서 말한 모든 일들을 자동으로 처리한다.

　이 지역 경찰들은 뉴햄프셔 대학이 이 소프트웨어를 개발한 이래로 지난 2년간 이 ‘스마트 카’를 사용해 왔다.
