　As Tech Industry Sags, Demand for Face-Lifts Firms

　The slump in Silicon Valley has been good news for plastic surgeons, with many high-tech workers opting for face-lifts and eye-jobs before they venture back into a tough job market, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

　About half the patients at the cosmetic surgery clinic at Stanford Medical Center recently have been high-tech workers, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

　“They’re going back in the job market, competing with younger people,” Dr. David Apfelberg, a plastic surgeon, told the newspaper.

　One tech industry worker told the newspaper she is scheduling cosmetic surgery for her eyes in anticipation that her company will go under.

　“I know if I go apply for a job anywhere and I look the way I look with my swollen eyes, no one’s going to hire me,” Maria, a 39-year-old sales professional, said. “I don’t look fresh, I look wiped out …. You’re not supposed to judge people by their looks, but people do.”

　In Santa Clara County, the hub of high-tech Silicon Valley, the jobless rate was 7.8 percent in November, down from 8.1 percent in October.

　Unemployment in the county had been as low as 1.3 percent in December 2000. However, a slow economy and the tech sector’s decline has forced area employers to slash payrolls.

　“그들은 직업을 구하기 위한 시장으로 돌아갈 것인데 그 곳에서 젊은 사람들과 경쟁하게 될 것”이라고 성형외과 의사인 데이비드 아펠버그 박사는 이 신문과의 인터뷰에서 밝혔다.

　한 첨단 산업의 근로자는 이 신문에 자신이 다니고 있는 회사가 문을 닫을 것이라는 판단 아래 눈 수술을 받을 계획이라고 말했다.

　전문 판매직원인 마리아(39)는 “만일 다른 회사에 지원을 하고 부풀어 오른 눈을 갖고 있어 보이는 지금의 모습대로 보인다면 아무도 나를 채용하지 않을 것이라는 것을 알고 있다”고 말하면서 “나는 생기가 넘쳐 보이지 않고 지쳐 보인다. 사람을 외모로 평가해서는 안되지만 사람들은 실제로 그렇게 하고 있다”고 주장하고 있다.

　첨단 실리콘밸리의 중심부인 샌타클래라 지역의 11월 실업률은 7.8%였는데 이는 10월의 8.1%에서 다소 하락한 것이다.

　이 지역에서 실업률은 2000년 12월 1.3%로 낮았다. 하지만 경기 침체와 첨단분야의 퇴조로 인해 이 지역의 고용주들은 월급을 삭감하게 됐다.
