　Banks Still Seeing Green

　For all the economic daggers stabbing at the economy before Sept. 11, as well as what happened on that day, U.S. banks are still reporting profits, even if they’re lower than last year.

　Citigroup, the nation’s largest financial services firm, reported quarterly operating profits down 8%. The decline seems modest considering that stock trading was curbed for a week and the attack on the World Trade Center caused unprecedented--and still uncounted--insurance claims. The New York-based company is in both of those businesses around the world. Nevertheless it earned $3.26 billion, or 63 cents per share, before charges in the third quarter, just 5 cents per share less than a year ago.

　J.P. Morgan Chase, the country’s No. 2 financial institution, is also still in the black. Reporting earnings this morning, it said quarterly operating profits slipped by 27%. The bank blamed economic weakness in general and the attack on New York in particular.
