Jim: How’d the meeting with the CEO go?

Mike: Three guesses. How does it always go?

Jim: That bad, huh?

Mike: Yeah. I can’t figure him out. I mean I did what he asked and changed some of the wording in the Merkell contract, but today he got all nitpicky about some other points.

Jim: Well, the Merkell deal is huge; we`re talking 1.5 million big ones. So, he`s well within his rights to want the contract exactly right.

Mike: I could understand if there were major things he wanted changed, but he’s just splitting hairs.

Jim: Hey, he`s the boss.

Mike: Thanks for the moral support, Jim. You’re a real pal.

Jim: 사장님하고 미팅은 어땠어?

Mike: 뻔하지 뭐. 항상 어땠는지 생각해 봐.

Jim: 그렇게 나빴어?

Mike: 응. 사장님을 도저히 이해할 수가 없어. 사장님이 말한 대로 메르켈 계약서의 용어 몇 개를 바꿔서 드렸는데, 오늘은 다른 온갖 사소한 것들을 들춰내시는 거야.

Jim: 메르켈 계약은 엄청난 건이잖아. 150만 달러짜리라구. 그 계약서가 완벽하길 원하시는 것도 당연하지.

Mike: 그가 큰 사항들을 바꾸려고 한다면 이해하지만, 너무 사소한 걸 따지고 드시니까 그렇지.

Jim: 사장님인데 어쩌겠어.

Mike: (비꼬면서) 정신적인 지원 고맙다, 짐, 넌 진정한 친구야.

‘splitting hairs’는 ‘머리끝을 분리하다’, 즉 ‘사소한 것을 따지다’라는 뜻이다.
