Grid computing technology is a relatively new method of collecting and analyzing data, which takes substantially less time than a conventional computer. This happens because millions of computers are joined together via the Internet in a powerful computational system.

The latest project using this technology is World Community Grid, in which users download the program www.worldcommunitygrid.com, and can then participate in performing computations. Initially about 10 million computers will be able to participate in research that aims to unravel the genetic codes underlying diseases like AIDS, Alzheimer’s and cancer. Participants are asked to leave their computers on when they’re not using them. When a computer joined to the system is idle, it requests data from the World Community Grid server, makes computations, then sends the information back to the server.

그리드를 이용한 컴퓨터 기술은 데이터를 수집하고 분석하는 비교적 새로운 방법으로, 기존의 컴퓨터보다 시간이 훨씬 더 적게 소요된다. 이는 수백만 대의 컴퓨터가 강력한 컴퓨터 시스템 내에서 인터넷을 통해 연결되기 때문에 가능한 일이다.

이 기술을 이용한 최근의 프로젝트로 세계공동체전산망(World Community Grid)이 있는데, 사용자들은 ‘www.worldcommunitygrid.com’에서 프로그램을 다운 받아 이 컴퓨터 처리과정에 참여할 수 있다. 일단은 약 1천만 대의 컴퓨터가 AIDS와 같은 질병의 유전자 코드를 풀기 위한 목적의 연구에 참여할 수 있게 될 예정이다. 이 프로그램에 참가하는 사람들에게는 컴퓨터를 사용하지 않을 때에도 컴퓨터를 켜둔 상태로 두도록 요청된다. 이 시스템에 연결된 컴퓨터가 사용되지 않고 있을 때, 이 컴퓨터는 세계공동체전산망 서버에서 데이터를 불러와 이를 처리하여 이 정보를 서버로 되돌려보내게 된다.
