The United Nations World food Programme (WFP) feeds on average 100 million people each year in countries devastated by drought and civil war. In addition to this philanthropic agenda, the WFP is now aiming to teach young children about world poverty and hunger-through a new video game.

‘Food Force’ begins by introducing a country in crisis. The players must then complete a series of missions, which could involve skirting danger zones to deliver food to the hungry, or rebuilding the country’s devastated infrastructure.

The WFP is targeting children between the ages of eight and thirteen, and is hoping to distribute the game to schools. ‘Food Force’, due out later this year, will first be available only in the U.S. as a free CD or download from the internet.

유엔 세계식량기구(WFP)는 가뭄과 내전으로 황폐화된 국가에서, 매년 평균 1억 명에 달하는 사람들에게 식량을 제공해 주고 있다. WFP는 이 같은 자선활동과 함께, 새로운 비디오 게임을 통해 어린이들에게 세계의 가난과 굶주림에 대해 교육시키고자 한다.

‘푸드 포스’ 게임은 위기에 처해 있는 한 나라를 소개하면서 시작된다. 일단 게임이 시작되면 게임자는 일련의 미션을 완수해야 하는데, 여기에는 기아상태의 사람들에게 식량을 운반하기 위해서 위험 지역을 피해가거나, 이 나라의 파괴된 기반시설을 재건하는 일 등이 있을 수 있다.

WFP는 8세에서 13세 사이의 어린이들을 대상으로 하고 있는 이 게임을 학교에 배포하기를 희망하고 있다. 올해 말에 출시될 예정인 이 게임은 우선 미국 내에서 무료 CD로 제공 하거나 인터넷에서 다운로드하여 이용할 수 있게 할 예정이다.
