　United States intelligence agencies have enlisted the aid of new software to locate its enemies, track patterns of activity, and identify volatile zones.

　The MetaCarta software analyzes text documents, such as emails and websites, by entering key search words. The program then cross checks the results from the search words (place name, time, date), with a huge geographical database, and produces a location by showing a point on a map.

　Representatives of the company that developed the software are saying the technology could be used to finally find Osama Bin Laden. The creation of the program was, after all, partly funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the CIA.

　In three to four years, they expect the software to be used for various purposes by many industries.

　메타카르타 소프트웨어는 주요 검색단어를 칠 경우, 이메일이나 웹사이트 같은 텍스트 문서들을 분석하게 된다. 그런 다음 검색단어(지역명, 시간, 날짜)로 나온 결과들을 거대한 지리정보 데이터베이스를 사용해 이를 대조 분석한 후 위치를 파악, 지도상에 한 지점으로 나타내 준다.

　이 소프트웨어를 개발한 회사 사람들은 이 기술이 결국 오사마 빈 라덴을 찾아내는 데도 사용될 수 있다고 말한다. 이 프로그램 제작에는 국방성 산하 첨단연구기획청(DARPA)과 CIA가 부분적으로 자금을 지원했다. 이들은 3, 4년 후에는 이 소프트웨어가 여러 산업분야에서 다양한 목적으로 사용될 것으로 예상하고 있다.
