　Late last year, the powers at Microsoft Corp. decided to stop providing support to customers for their older operating systems. By this Friday, Windows 98 and Windows 98 S.E. would have been abandoned had MS not suddenly reversed that decision.

　A MS spokesperson says one reason for the reversal is that developing countries did not prepare for the change because they were unaware of it.

　The reversal of the decision means that MS will continue offering advice over the phone on these two and the notoriously problematic Windows Millennium Edition. They will also evaluate the need for customers to receive security patches through to June 30, 2006.

　The MS spokesperson admits to needing more time in developing markets to communicate to customers the lifespan of their support systems.

　지난해 말 MS의 경영진은 자사의 오래된 운용체계를 사용하는 소비자에 대한 지원을 중단하기로 결정한 바 있다. 이번 금요일을 기해 윈도98과 윈도98 S.E는 버림을 받았을 수도 있었을 것이다. MS사가 갑자기 그 결정을 뒤집지만 않았어도 말이다.

　MS사의 한 대변인은 이 결정을 번복한 한 가지 이유로 개발도상국가가 이 사실을 알지 못해 이러한 변화에 대한 준비돼 있지 않았던 점을 들었다.

　이번 결정 번복으로 MS는 윈도98과 윈도98 SE 이 두 시스템과 문제가 많은 윈도 ME에 대한 상담을 전화상으로 계속 제공하게 된다. 또한 소비자들이 보안패치를 받아야 할 필요성이 어느 정도인지에 대해서도 2006년 6월 30일까지 평가하게 된다.

　MS 대변인은 개발도상국의 시장에서 소비자들에게 지원체계의 수명을 알리는 데는 시간이 좀 더 필요함을 인정했다.
