　When Apple Computer Inc. released the latest update to its operating system, OS X, it offered the compact disc with the updating software free to users who already had the earlier version of the system.

　But the disc contained more than the material necessary for the software upgrade, a flaw uncovered by the Web site MacFixit, a respected guide to using and troubleshooting Apple’s computers. In fact, the update discs actually contain a full version of the powerful new operating system, which the company generally sells for $129. Users who want to install the full version of the new software - whether or not they bought the original OS X - need only delete a single program that checks to ensure that their computer already runs the old system. On Nov. 20, the site published a brief article explaining this fact and describing the simple procedure that converts the disc to allow full installation.

　The article earned the site a rebuke from Apple’s lawyers, who accused the site of breaking laws that protect Apple’s copyrights and that make it illegal to circumvent mechanisms intended to protect copyrights. “We believe that this is a very serious matter,” the lawyers wrote, adding, “On behalf of our client, we demand that you cease and desist from publishing or distributing the above-referenced materials.”
