[이찬승의 ET잉글리시](266)韓정통부, 해외기업 연구소 유치 추진

Edging Korea closer to becoming the envisioned R&D hub of Northeast Asia, the Ministry of Information and Communication will focus on luring foreign firms to establish research centers here. The ministry’s goal is to secure 40 foreign businesses by 2012.

On par with the goal of attracting five companies per year for the next eight years, the ministry solidified research investments with world-leading businesses last year, two of which were Intel and Hewlett-Packard. An official says they’re now in negotiations with big names like Qualcomm and Microsoft.

The ministry attributes the ability to secure these deals to Korea’s solid IT infrastructure and reputation for quickly adopting to new trends.

The Ministry of Science and Technology has also been active in creating foreign research labs such as Institut Pastuer.

한국을 동북아시아의 미래 R&D의 중심으로 만들기 위해 정보통신부가 해외기업들을 유치하여 이들의 연구기관을 한국에 설립하도록 하는 데 주력할 예정이다. 정통부는 2012년까지 40개 외국기업 유치를 목표로 하고 있다.

앞으로 8년간 매년 5개 기업을 유치하는 목표와 함께, 정통부는 지난해 인텔과 휴렛패커드사를 비롯한 세계 유수 기업들의 연구 투자를 확보했다. 정통부의 한 관리는 퀄컴, 마이크로소프트와 같은 거대 기업과도 현재 협상이 진행 중이라고 전했다.

정통부는 한국의 탄탄한 IT 인프라와 새로운 환경에 빠르게 적응한다는 명성 덕분에 이러한 협상 성사가 가능했다고 보고 있다.

과학기술부 역시 파스퇴르 연구소와 같은 해외 연구소 설립을 적극적으로 추진하고 있다.
