Susan: One thing industrialized countries take for granted is universal immunization.

Chan: Yes, we forget about all those shots we had as kids… that we`re protected against many diseases.

Susan: Over 2 million people die each year in poor countries because they haven’t been immunized against diseases like measles, tetanus and polio.

Chan: There’s an agency called the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization… and Bill & Melinda Gates just donated $750 million to it.

Susan: That’s great, but it`s estimated that $8 to $12 billion is needed to immunize everybody, so there’s still a long way to go.

Chan: Well, now it’s time for governments to pitch in and help make up the difference.

수잔: 선진 공업국들이 당연시 여기는 한가지 있다면 바로 모두가 받는 예방접종일거야.

찬: 맞아, 어릴 때 맞은 주사들로 덕분에 우리가 질병에 걸리지 않게 된다는 사실을 잊지.

수잔: 빈곤국들에서는 매년 200만이 넘는 사람들이 홍역, 파상풍, 소아마비 예방접종을 받지 못해 사망한다고 해.

찬: 세계백신면역연합이란 단체가 있는데, 빌 게이츠과 멜린다 게이츠 부부가 그 단체에 7억5000만달러를 기부했다는 군.

수잔: 그거 좋은 소식이군, 하지만 모두에게 면역혜택이 돌아가려면 80억에서 120억달러가 필요한 것으로 추정된다고 하니, 여전히 갈 길이 먼 셈이네.

찬: 음, 각국 정부들이 협력하여 그 차액을 충당해야 할 때가 아닌가 해.
