　질병 유전자 찾는 DNA칩 기술 개발

In what is being hailed as a fusion of information technology and biology, a team of Korean researchers has developed a DNA chip that can significantly speed up the time it takes to analyze gene sequences. Instead of analyzing genes one-by-one, the technology now enables scientists to study genes by the thousands.

This in turn yields quicker identification of genes that are prone to or contain diseases, allowing scientists to diagnose cancer and other illnesses more efficiently. The technology is also expected to enhance the study of genetic therapy, the technique for correcting diseased genes.

The state-funded Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute developed the software, which will also help stem cell researchers in locating particular kinds of genes.

한국의 한 연구팀이 DNA칩을 통해 유전자 배열을 더 빠른 시간 내에 분석해 낼 수 있는 기술을 개발해 IT기술과 생물학의 결합이라는 찬사를 받고 있다. 이 기술을 사용할 경우, 과학자들은 유전자를 하나하나 분석하던 종전과는 달리 수천 개 단위로 연구할 수 있게 된다.
