A number of Korean sites offering peer-to-peer MP3s are being forced to adopt a subscription method, since new intellectual property laws this year make it illegal to download files for free.

Because many new phones sold in Korea have the function of storing and playing MP3 files, the cell phone operators also want a piece of the online music sales pie. SK Telecom launched its online music site, Melon, and was soon joined by LG Telecom’s Music On. The market is now anticipating the arrival of KTF’s online music store.

This means that some of the original sites to offer downloads, like Bugs Music, are at risk, having to compete with the IT giants that have huge marketing budgets and can offer specials in relation with the phone services they provide.

올해 나온 새로운 저작권법에 의해 파일을 무료로 다운받는 것이 불법이 됨에 따라, P2P MP3 파일 공유 서비스를 제공하는 한국의 많은 웹사이트들이 유로회원 가입방식을 도입해야 할 실정이다.

한국에서 판매되는 많은 신형 전화기들이 MP3 파일을 저장하고 재생하는 기능을 갖추고 있어, 이동전화 업체들 또한 온라인 음악 판매 전체 파이에서 어느 정도 몫을 차지하기를 원하고 있다. SK텔레콤에서는 자체 온라인 음악 사이트인 멜론을 개장했고, LG텔레콤도 뮤직온으로 곧 이에 합류했다. KTF역시 이제 온라인 음악 판매 사이트를 선보일 것으로 보인다.

이로써 벅스뮤직과 같이 다운로드 서비스를 제공하는 기존의 사이트들 중 일부의 경우, 막대한 마케팅 예산을 확보하고 있으며, 자사의 전화 서비스와 연계된 특전을 제공할 수 있는 IT 대기업들과 경쟁해야 하므로 위기에 처할 수도 있게 될 것이다.
