Every time you print a document, the printer you use leaves a distinct signature on the paper.

There’s a good explanation for this. For a company to produce the exact same printer each time would require very tight manufacturing practices, which means spending more money. Because of the competitive market, these companies have to keep their prices low, thus creating machines with varying signatures.

A team of scientists at the Purdue University in Indiana has found a way to detect and read those signatures with image processing software. They determine the mathematical features of the printed letters, then use pattern-recognition to identify the printer.

The team members hope this method will be helpful in catching people who make important documents such as counterfeit money and fake passports.

연구진은 이 기술이 위조 지폐나 위조 여권과 같은 중대한 문서를 만든 사람을 잡는데 도움이 되기를 기대하고 있다.
