The University of Leicester has created a website compiling local directories from England and Wales that date back to 1750. Historicaldirectories.org has been likened to the Yellow Pages but includes more extensive information on people, such as details of census reports, and also nature and weather, such as reports of eclipses and the times of ocean tides.

When searching the database for a specific term, the website uses technology called fuzzy logic to allow the searcher to find a match to a word, even if the spelling was different in the document.

To date, the website offers 330,000 documents from 643 directories. It can be useful for a variety of things, from tracing family history to researching advertisement strategies of a different era.
