At a conference in Japan last week, a team of Australian technology experts unveiled a driver assistant system (DAS), which essentially will allow cars to read road signs.

A camera attached to the rear-view mirror records what’s on the road ahead and transfers the images to a dashboard computer, which will then search for a match between the shape of the road sign and a shape in its database. After computing the sign’s meaning, another connection between the computer and the speedometer can tell if the driver was indeed speeding, and whether he or she has slowed accordingly.

The technology is expected to improve road safety, but creators of the system point out that some drivers may also be appreciative if it helps them avoid getting speeding fines.

지난 주 일본에서 열린 한 회의에서 호주의 한 기술팀이 운전자보조시스템(DAS)을 공개했다. 이 시스템은 기본적으로 자동차가 도로표지판을 읽을 수 있게 해준다.

백미러에 부착된 카메라로 전방 도로에 무엇이 있는지 기록되며, 이는 계기판 컴퓨터에 영상으로 전송되고 그 즉시 이 컴퓨터는 내부 데이터베이스에서 도로표지판과의 모양이 부합하는 것을 찾게 된다. 도로 표지의 의미가 입력되면, 컴퓨터와 속도계간의 또 다른 연결을 통해 운전자가 속력을 더 내야 할지 또는 줄여야 할지를 알려줄 수 있게 된다.

이 기술로 도로 안전이 향상될 것으로 기대되고 있는 한편, 이 시스템 개발자들은 이 시스템으로 속도위반 벌금을 무는 일을 면할 수 있게 된다면, 일부 운전자들은 이에 매우 감사할 것이라는 역시 언급하였다.
