Online auction site, eBay, wants to spread its business to include more and more countries around the world. In 2001, it secured a holding in China with an $150m investment in EachNet, and in June of this year it agreed to pay $50m for India’s site, Baazee.com.

eBay is starting to reap the rewards of its availability in 29 countries, with revenues from international sites increasing by 82% from last year. International operations now account for 42% of its total business.

　We may see that number increase if South Korean firm Internet Auction Co. agrees to take eBay’s offer of $530m for its share of the online auctioning business. In South Korea, 11m out of a population of 48m, have access to broadband internet, marking the highest concentration of broadband users in the world.

　e베이는 29개국에서 서비스를 제공한 결과 맺어진 결실을 이제 거둬 들이고 있어, 전세계적으로 보유한 사이트에서 벌어들인 수입은 작년 대비 82% 증가하였다. 현재 해외에서의 사업이 차지하는 비중은 전체 사업의 42%에 달한다.

　한국의 옥션사가 온라인 경매 사업 주식에 대해 5억3000만달러를 지불하겠다는 e베이의 제의를 받아들일 경우, 이 수치는 더욱 증가할 것으로 보인다. 한국은 인구 4800만명 중 1100만명이 광대역 인터넷 접속 시스템을 사용하고 있어, 전세계에서 광대역 인터넷 사용자가 가장 많은 지역이다.
