Microsoft Corp. will have to defend itself against allegations that it`s once again monopolizing the software market. This time, South Korean site Daum Communications Corp., is pointing the finger at the computer giant.

Daum is asking for 10 billion won ($8.7 million) from Microsoft for damages incurred when it says Microsoft attached an instant messaging program to its Windows operating system. Daum alleges that Microsoft violated trade laws by tagging MSN Messenger onto its Windows XP. Microsoft naturally denies the accusations.

This isn`t the first time Daum has had complaints. No wonder, as it garners only 10 percent of the instant messaging service in Korea. It filed a formal complaint against Microsoft in 2001 with the Fair Trade Commission, but is still waiting for a result from the investigation.

마이크로소프트사가 소프트웨어 시장을 또 다시 독점하고 있다는 주장에 맞서 변호해야 할 입장에 처해 있다. 이번에는 한국의 다음 커뮤니케이션으로부터 이 거대 컴퓨터 회사가 비난을 받고 있다.

다음은 MS사가 윈도우 운영체제에 인스턴트 메시지 프로그램을 끼워 판매함으로 인해 발생한 손해에 대해 100억원(870만 달러)을 지불할 것을 요구하고 있다.다음사는 MS사가 윈도우XP에 MSN 메신저를 포함시킨 것은 거래법 위반이라고 주장하고 있다. MS사측에서는 물론 이러한 혐의를 부인하고 있다.

다음측이 소송을 제기한 것은 이번이 처음은 아니다. 한국내 인스턴트 메시지 서비스에서 다음의 점유율이 10%에 지나지 않음을 생각해 보면, 이는 그리 놀랄 일이 아니다. 다음은 2001년 공정거래위원회에 MS사를 정식으로 고소한 바 있으며, 이에 대한 심의 결과를 여전히 기다리고 있는 중이다.
