Long lines at the checkout counter can make shopping at the supermarket a real headache. If supermarkets used the latest idea in shopping, though, long lines would disappear! This idea is called the `smart store`.

Smart stores use computer technology to make our lives easier. When entering a smart supermarket, you`d be given a small electronic pen from an assistant. To select items from the shelves, you`d run the pen over the bar code on the goods before you put them in your basket. The pen would record the things you are buying. When checking out, you`d go to a `console` which looks like a bank`s cash machine. You`d put the pen into the console and the computer would show the total cost. To pay, you`d pass a credit card through a slot on the console, then you`d put your hand or finger on a scanner. You`d leave the shop through a doorway with a detector, and if you didn`t scan everything in your basket, an alarm would ring.

대형상점에서 장보기란 계산대에 늘어선 긴 줄 때문에 정말 골칫거리가 될 수 있다. 하지만 대형상점이 최근에 나온 쇼핑 아이디어를 이용한다면 긴 줄은 사라질 수도 있을 것이다! 이 아이디어는 `스마트 스토어`라고 불린다.

스마트 스토어에서는 우리 삶을 더욱 편리하게 해주기 위해 컴퓨터 기술을 사용한다. 스마트 슈퍼마켓에 들어서면 점원이 작은 전자 펜을 주게 된다. 선반에서 물건을 고르려면, 장바구니에 담기 전에 물건의 바코드에 이 펜을 살짝 갖다 대기만 하면 된다. 계산할 때는 은행의 현금지급기처럼 생긴 `제어장치`로 가면 될 것이다. 여기에 전자 펜을 넣으면 총액이 얼마인지 컴퓨터가 보여준다. 지불할 때에는 이 장치의 가는 홈에 신용카드를 통과시키고는 다음으로 스캐너 위에 손이나 손가락을 올리면 된다. 이 슈퍼마켓을 나갈 때는 탐지기가 달린 문을 통과하게 되며, 쇼핑바구니 안에 있는 물건 모두를 스캔하지 않았을 경우 경보장치가 울릴 것이다.
