자녀가 독립하기 전까지 뒷바라지를 마다않는 한국 부모에 대한 Luke의 생각을 들어봅시다.

“한국 부모는 자녀에게 정말 헌신적이다”라고 말할 때

“Korean parents are very devoted to their children.”

Luke: 명산, are you going to live with your parents when you come back to Korea?

명산: Most likely I am. It’s the way it is and they want to keep me for good, I guess.

Luke: Wow, Korean parents are very devoted to their children. They seem to take care of their children until the very last moment.

명산: Yes, it’s good and bad. I feel pressured a lot because I feel this responsibility I have to support my parents when they are weak.

Luke: 명산, 한국에 돌아오면 부모님과 함께 살 거지?

명산: 응, 아무래도 그렇게 되겠지. 한국에서는 그렇게들 해. 그리고 내가 생각하기에는 우리 부모님은 나를 아주 오랫동안 데리고 있고 싶어하실 거야.

Luke: 한국 부모는 자녀에게 정말 헌신적이신 것 같아. 생을 다하는 날까지 늘 자녀를 걱정하는 것 같다구.

명산: 음, 그게 좋기도 하고 나쁘기도 해. 나중에 부모님이 약해지시면 내가 꼭 모셔야 한다는 책임감이 들기도 하거든.

명산: Korean parents love their children so much and they think of their kids first, no matter what. That’s why they want to keep them for long time.

Luke: Are you saying that American parents don’t love their kids as much? I think it’s just different way of showing love.

명산: 한국 부모는 자식을 아주 끔찍이 사랑하고 항상 먼저 생각하셔. 그래서 자식과 오랫동안 있고 싶어하는 거 같아.

Luke: 그러면 미국 부모는 자식을 한국만큼 사랑하지 않는단 말이야? 그냥 사랑하는 방법이 다른 것 뿐이겠지.
