Mobile phone subscribers around the globe totaled nearly 1.5 billion by the middle of this year, about one quarter of the world’s population, the International Telecommunication Union said on Thursday.

The figure reflected a sharp surge in the mobile telephony business, especially in developing countries, over the first half of the decade, with subscribers doubling since 2000, according to the United Nations agency’s annual report. The ITU said the growth in mobile phone subscribers had outpaced that for fixed lines, who totaled some 1.85 billion today against one billion at the start of the century, and was also outstripping the rate of increase in Internet users.

Driving the mobile phone phenomenon, according to the report, was a rapid rise in subscriber numbers in three of the world’s most populous nations -- China, India and Russia. And by the middle of the year developing countries as a whole had overtaken rich nations to account for 56 percent of all mobile subscribers, while accounting for 79 percent of growth in the market since 2000.

국제전기통신연합(ITU)은 지난 목요일 올해 중반까지 전세계 이동전화 가입자 수가 세계 인구의 약 4분의 1인 15억 명에 이르렀다고 밝혔다.

유엔 산하 기구인 ITU의 연례 보고서에서는 이 수치는 지난 몇 년간, 특히 개발도상국에서의, 이동전화사업의 급격한 성장을 보여주는 것이라고 말하고 있다. 이동전화 가입자 수는 2000년 이래 두배로 증가하였다. ITU는 이동전화는 가입자 증가율에 있어 21세기 초입에는 가입자 수가 10억이었던 데 비해 현재 18억5천 명으로 유선전화를 능가하였으며, 인터넷 사용자의 증가 비율 역시 앞지르고 있다고 전했다.

보고서에서는 이 같은 현상을 불러일으킨 요소로 세계에서 인구가 가장 많은 중국, 인도, 러시아 3국에서의 가입자 수 급증을 꼽았다. 개발도상국들의 이동전화 가입자 수는 올해 중반에는 전체 이동전화 가입자의 56%를 차지하여 선진국을 추월했고, 2000년 이래 이동전화 시장 성장의 79%를 차지했다.
