A professor at the National University of Singapore has invented a shirt that will be capable of detecting if and when the wearer has an accident, and then making it possible to call for help independently of the wearer.

They’re calling it ‘Memswear’, because the device uses Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (Mems) engineering inserted in the clothing. The technology is fitted with a silicon detector, which can sense if the wearer of the shirt falls down or suffers an injury. Bluetooth technology then transmits an alert via text message, email, or phone call, from the wearer’s mobile phone.

Professor Francis Tay says he designed this model to assist elderly people, but he also wants it to be used by military personnel and athletes.

Tay says he hopes the clothing will be on the market soon for about $60.00.

싱가폴 국립대학의 한 교수가 옷을 착용한 사람이 만약 사고를 당할 경우 이를 알아차려 착용자의 작동 없이도 도움을 요청할 수 있게 해주는 셔츠를 발명했다.

이 장치에는 옷감에 넣은 초소형 전기 기계시스템(Mems) 공학이 사용된 까닭에, 개발자들은 셔츠를 ‘멤스웨어’라 이름 붙였다. 이 장치에는 실리콘 탐지기가 달려 있어 셔츠 착용자가 쓰러지거나 다칠 경우 이를 감지해 낼 수 있다. 그런 후, 블루투스 기술을 사용하여 셔츠 착용자의 휴대전화로 문자메시지·이메일을 보내거나 전화를 걸어 구조신호를 보내게 된다.

프란시스 테이 교수는 이 장치는 노인들을 위해 개발한 것이나, 군인이나 운동 선수들도 사용할 수 있게 되기를 바란다고 말했다.

테이 교수는 이 옷이 60달러 정도 가격으로 곧 판매되기를 기대한다고 전했다.
