The Attorneys general of 45 states in the United States have issued warning letters to companies that offer file-sharing software. Companies that control Kazaa, Morpheus, Grokster, Bear Share, Blubster, MetaMachine/EDonkey 2000 and Lime Wire, along with so-called P2P industry trade unions, received letters urging them to provide comprehensive information to their users about the potential legal and security risks associated with file-sharing.

Legal experts say that there’s still no decisive ruling on whether file-sharing violates state laws, hence legal possibilities for the attorneys general are not clearly defined.

The warning letters did not contain ultimatums, rather they requested that the file-sharing sites, in addition to providing more information to their users, also refrain from altering the software to include encryption features which hide users’ identities.

미국 45개 주의 검찰들이 파일 공유 소프트웨어 제공 업체들에게 경고 서한을 보냈다. 카자, 모피어스, 그록스터, 베어셰어, 블럽스터, 메타머신/이동키2000 및 라임와이어등을 관리하는 회사들과 소위 말하는 P2P 회사 조합들이 파일 공유와 관련될 수 있는 법적, 보안상의 위험에 관한 전반적인 정보를 사용자들에게 제공할 것을 촉구하는 내용의 서한을 받았다.

법률 전문가들은 파일 공유가 주 법령을 위반하는 지 여부에 대한 확실한 판결이 여전히 없으며, 따라서 검찰측에서 법적으로 취할 수 있는 조치에 대해 명확히 규정된 것은 없다고 말한다.

이번 경고 서한이 최후 통첩을 담고 있는 것은 아니나, 파일 공유 사이트들이 사용자들에게 더 많은 정보를 제공하는 것 이외에도 소프트웨어를 변경하여 사용자들의 신원을 숨기는 기능을 넣는 것 역시 삼가도록 요구하고 있다.
