Broadband Internet access will finally be available to North Americans…anywhere on the continent.

Thanks to satellite communications company Telesat Canada, and satellite launch provider Arianespace, the world’s largest and heaviest satellite is now orbiting the Earth 35,000 kilometers above the equator.

The satellite, dubbed the Anik F2, was moored to the Ariane 5 rocket until clearing the Earth`s atmosphere, where it was ejected and sent into orbit.

The first satellite to combine cutting edge Ka-band technology with older transponders, Anik F2 will project a frequency that enables users in rural areas to access broadband Internet. Previously, high speed Internet was so expensive, rural dwellers were restricted to cable or dial-up connections.

A nik F2 will use its 50-meter solar panels to power it until 2020 when it is scheduled to retire.

드디어 북미 대륙 어디에서나 광대역 인터넷 접속이 가능하게 될 전망이다.

위성통신회사 ‘Telesat Canada’와 위성발사업체 ‘Arianespace’ 이 만든 세계에서 가장 크고 무게가 가장 많이 나가는 위성이 적도상 3만5천㎞에서 지구 주위를 돌고 있다.

‘Anik F2’라 이름 붙여진 본 위성은 ‘Ariane5’ 로켓에 장착되어 대기권 경계지점까지 올라갔으며, 이 지점에서 분리되어 궤도상으로 쏘아 올려졌다.

위성으로서는 처음으로 기존 신호 응답기에 최첨단 ‘Ka-밴드’ 기술을 접목시키게 될 ‘Anik F2’에서 내보내는 주파수로 전원 지역 사용자들은 광대역 인터넷에 접속할 수 있게 된다. 지금까지 고속 인터넷은 너무 비싸 인적이 드문 지역 거주자들은 케이블이나 전화 회선 접속으로 만족해야 했다.

‘Anik F2’는 2020년 철수될 때까지 전력 공급을 위해 50미터 크기의 태양 전지판을 사용할 예정이다.
