A coalition of countries and cities launched an initiative last week in Geneva that will aim to narrow the digital divide between industrialized and developing countries.

The Digital Solidarity Fund received support from the United Nations last year, the backing of some 200 cities around the world, and has been promised funds amounting to more than US$1.7 million from Nigeria, Algeria and France.

The fund is intended to supply poor countries with technological tools, such as computers and phones that can be used to enhance education and community projects. The project is also aimed at spreading information technology, as 80 percent of the world still doesn’t have access to it.

Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade proposed the idea in 2003 at the World Summit on the Information Society.



지난 주 제네바에서 국가와 도시가 힘을 합쳐 선진국과 개발도상국 간의 디지털 격차를 좁히기 위한 계획을 출범시켰다.

디지털연대펀드(DSF)는 지난해 전세계 200여 도시를 비롯한 유엔의 지지를 받았으며, 나이지리아, 알제리, 프랑스로부터 미화 170만 달러 이상의 자금 지원을 약속 받았다.

이 펀드는 교육, 지역사회 사업을 촉진하는 데 사용될 수 있는 컴퓨터, 전화와 같은 기술적 도구들을 빈곤국들에 공급할 예정이다. 이번 프로젝트는 또한 정보 기술을 널리 보급할 목적으로 있다. 현재 세계의 80%는 여전히 이 정보기술을 사용하지 못하고 있다.

이 펀드는 지난 2003년 정보사회세계정상회담(WSIS)에서 압둘라예 웨이드 세네갈 대통령이 제안한 것이다.
