Susan: That’s good. I guess not many people have seen it at work.

Chan: They’re advertising it as the chip that will power Sony’s PlayStation 3, but it’s capable of doing much more than that.

Susan: That’s because it can roam over a network, borrowing unused processing power from other sources.

Chan: In what’s known as grid computing.

Susan: With that kind of capacity, no wonder it’s expected to be used in supercomputing and broadband-rich media applications.

찬: IBM, 소니, 도시바에서 베일에 싸여 있는 ‘셀 칩’ 이 어떻게 작동하는지 그 세부사항을 공개할 거래.

수잔: 거 반가운 소식이네. 그게 작동하는 걸 본 사람은 그리 많지는 않을 것 같은데.

찬: 이 칩이 소니의 PS3에 사용될 것이라고 광고하고 있긴 하지만, 이 칩은 그보다 더 많은 것들을 해낼 수 있지.

수잔: 그건 바로 이 칩이 네트워크를 돌아다니며 다른 소스로부터 사용되지 않고 있는 프로세스 파워를 빌려올 수 있기 때문이지.

찬: 바로 그리드 컴퓨팅이라 알려진 것에서 말이지.

수잔: 그런 능력을 가지고 있다면, 그 칩이 슈퍼컴퓨팅이나 초고속인터넷이 많이 쓰이는 미디어 애플리케이션에 사용될 것으로 예상되는 게 당연하군.
