The Technical Research Center of Finland, a nonprofit, government research organization, has developed a new technological tool to help blind people get around more easily.

It’s a third-generation cell phone with a built-in GPS system and voice recognition program. The user simply needs to state where she or he wants to go, and after being processed at a central server, the device will relay the directions using speech.

Blind people will be able to get directions to bus stops and train stations, as well as receive information about timetables and delays. They’ll know how to get to their bus stop, and when their bus is due to arrive.

The guidance system now works in Helsinki and will be evaluated by a group of blind testers in the fall.

핀란드의 비영리 정부 산하 연구기관인 ‘기술 리서치 센터’에서 맹인들이 보다 용이하게 다닐 수 있게 해주는 새로운 장치를 개발했다.

이 장치는 바로 GPS시스템과 음성인식 프로그램을 내장한 3세대 휴대 전화이다. 사용자가 가고자 하는 곳을 그냥 말하기만 하면, 중앙 서버에서 이를 처리한 후, 음성으로 방향을 알려준다.

맹인들은 버스 정류장과 기차역으로 가는 길은 물론, 시간표와 연착 정보까지 받을 수 있게 된다. 이들은 가고자 하는 버스 정류장까지 가는 방법과 버스가 언제 도착할지도 알 수 있게 되었다.

이 안내 시스템은 헬싱키에서 시행 중이며, 올 가을 맹인 시험자 그룹이 이에 대한 평가를 하게 된다.
