The first ever computer virus spread by mobile phones has been sent to anti-virus firms. No infections have been reported and the worm is harmless but it is proof that mobiles are at risk from virus writers. The worm, known as Cabir, infects phones and devices running the Symbian operating system.

When the infected file is launched the mobile phone`s screen displays the word “Caribe“. Every time the mobile phone is turned on, the worm will launch itself and scan the area for other phones to infect, sending a copy of itself to any it finds.

Anti-virus firms are divided on whether it will open the floodgate to similar viruses.

휴대폰에 의해 확산되는 바이러스가 처음으로 바이러스 퇴치 업체들에 의해 보고됐다. 아직은 바이러스 감염 사례가 보고된 바 없으며 이 바이러스는 무해하나, 이는 이동전화기 역시 바이러스 제작자들로부터 안전하지 못하다는 것을 보여주는 증거다. ‘캐비르’로 알려진 이 바이러스는 심비안 운용체계로 작동되는 전화기와 기기들에 침투한다.

바이러스에 감염된 파일이 들어오면, 휴대폰 화면에는 ‘Caribe’라는 단어가 나타난다. 전화기를 켤 때마다 이 바이러스는 자동으로 활성화되어, 그 지역에서 감염되지 않은 다른 휴대 전화들을 찾아내어 이 파일의 복사본을 보내게 된다.

이 바이러스를 시작으로 유사한 바이러스들의 범람이 올 지에 대해서는 바이러스 퇴치 업체들 사이에서도 의견이 엇갈리고 있다.
