[인터넷 영어] Hackers attack NASA, Navy

NASA, the Navy, and university campuses throughout the nation were the targets Monday evening of 「denial of service」 attacks on computers running Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 95 operating systems.

The attacks, waged over the Internet, made computers crash and caused what is known as the 「blue screen of death」- a reference to the blue screen that accompanies Microsoft「s 「fatal error」 message.

NASA and university systems managers said that, while the attacks cost them time, there was no reported data loss or other permanent damage.

Educational institutions including the University of California campuses at Berkeley, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Irvine; the Twin Cities Campus of the University of Minnesota; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Cornell University; the University of Washington; the University of Texas at Austin; and the University of Wisconsin at Madison, a NASA research partner, also were targeted. A reported attack on computers at Northwestern University could not be confirmed.

<해커에 공격당한 NASA와 해군>

월요일 아침, 항공우주국(NASA), 해군 그리고 전국의 대학 캠퍼스들이 「서비스 중단」이라는 (해커)공격의 표적이 됐다. 마이크로소프트 윈도NT와 윈도95 운용체계로 운영되는 컴퓨터들이 공격을 당했다.

인터넷을 통해 이뤄진 이 공격은 컴퓨터들을 다운시켜 이른바 「죽음의 청색화면」 상태가 되도록 했다 - 마이크로소프트의 (윈도95 등에서) 「치명적 오류」 메시지와 함께 나타나는 청색화면을 참조.

NASA와 대학의 시스템 관리자들은 공격으로 시스템이 중단된 시간이 있었지만 데이터 손실이나 다른 영구적 손실은 없는 것으로 보고됐다고 말했다.

캘리포니아대학교 버클리, LA, 샌디에고, 어빙 캠퍼스, 미네소타대학교 트윈시티즈캠퍼스, MIT, 코넬대, 워싱턴대, 텍서스대(오스틴), 위스컨신대(매디슨) 등을 포함한 교육기관과 NASA연구협력기관들 역시 표적이 됐다. 보고됐던 노스웨스턴대학교에 대한 공격은 공식 확인되지 않았다.
