Korea’s Ministry of Information and Communication is set to introduce a new mobile phone carrier system, called ‘number portability’. This new policy will allow customers to switch carriers without changing their numbers.

　Subscribers to SK Telecom, Korea’s leading carrier, are restricted to using 011 as their first three digits; KTF uses 016 and 018 for its access codes; and LG Telecom uses 019. As the practice stands now, mobile phone users must spend money and time to change those numbers.

　Beginning in January of next year, current subscribers of SK Telecom will be allowed to change carriers while keeping their old numbers. Customers of KTF will have access to number portability in the second half of 2004, and LG subscribers in 2005.

　

　한국 정보통신부가 ‘번호 이동성’이라 불리는 새로운 이동전화 가입제도를 도입할 예정이다. 이 새로운 정책이 시행되면 이동전화 사용자들은 번호를 변경하지 않고도 이동전화업체를 바꿀 수 있게 된다.

　한국 최대의 이동전화 업체인 SK 텔레콤 가입자들은 처음 세 자리 번호로 011을 사용하도록 되어 있으며, 또한 KTF에서는 016, 018, LG 텔레콤은 019를 각각 사용하도록 하고 있다. 지금까지 시행되는 대로라면, 이동전화 사용자들이 번호를 변경하기 위해서는 시간과 경비를 들여야 한다.

　그러나 내년 1월부터 시작하여, 우선 SK 텔레콤 가입자들이 기존에 사용하던 번호는 그대로 두고, 가입업체를 바꿀 수 있게 된다. 또한, KTF 가입자들은 2004년 하반기에, LG 가입자들은 2005년에는 이 제도를 이용할 수 있게 된다.
