TI와 노키아, 퀄컴에 도전

　Texas Instruments and Nokia have teamed up with STMicroelectronics, Europe’s largest chipmaker, to develop a new CDMA chipset for mobile phone manufacturers, throwing a shot across the bow of market leader Qualcomm. The chipsets will be marketed in Asia and the Americas.

　The technology, known as CDMA 2000 1X, already is incorporated in certain Nokia handsets, and qualified samples of the chipset will be available in the third quarter.

　The move brings Texas Instruments and Nokia into head-to-head competition with Qualcomm, which owns about 90 percent of the market for cell-phone chips that use CDMA technology. CDMA, or code division multiple access, is a fast growing alternative to GSM (Global System for Mobile communications), the dominant wireless standard outside the United States. GSM is used by about 70 percent of the mobile subscriber base worldwide.

　텍사스 인스트루먼츠와 노키아는 무선 전화에 사용할 새로운 CDMA 칩세트를 개발하기 위해 유럽 제일의 칩 생산업체인 ST마이크로일렉트로닉스와 협력하면서 선두업체인 퀄컴에 도전하고 있다. 새로운 칩세트는 아시아와 미국 시장에서 판매될 예정이다.

　CDMA 2000 1X로 알려진 이 기술은 노키아의 휴대 전화에서 이미 구체화됐으며 3분기에는 검증되어진 칩세트를 장착한 샘플들을 사용할 수 있을 것이다.

　이러한 움직임으로 텍사스 인스트루먼츠와 노키아는 CDMA 기술을 이용한 휴대전화 시장의 90%를 점유하고 있는 퀄컴과 치열한 접전을 벌이게 됐다. 코드분할다중접속(CDMA)은 미국 외의 지역에서 지배적인 무선 표준인, 이동통신을 위한 일반시스템(GSM)을 빠르게 대체해 가고 있다. 전세계 이동통신 가입자의 70%가 GSM을 사용하고 있다.
