　The Intel Corporation named a 28-year employee as president and chief operating officer today, grooming him to take over the company as chief executive when Craig R Barrett retires within three years.

　With his appointment, Paul S Otellini, who had run the chip-making division responsible for 80 percent of Intel’s sales, becomes the heir apparent to the top executive position at the world’s largest manufacturer of semiconductors.

　Mr. Barrett held the same positions before succeeding Andrew S Grove, the current chairman, as chief executive in 1998.

　The two men will form an executive office with divided responsibilities. Mr. Barrett, 62, said he would focus on the company’s long-term strategy and acquisitions, while Mr. Otellini, 51, would assume responsibility for the daily operations.

　Intel, based in Santa Clara, Calif., requires employees to retire at 65. Mr. Barrett turns 63 in August.
