　In refreshing its laptop PC line, MicronPC has added a fingerprint scanner authentication system to its Transport GX2. The scanner is made by Veridicom, a spinoff of Lucent Technologies. Without the right fingerprint, the machine won’t start up.

　Using technology developed at Bell Labs, the Veridicom scanner creates a geometric image based on the location of different points in the fingerprint itself. The image becomes a password that allows the machine to start up the boot process. Other companies have created fingerprint scanners that can be inserted into the PC card slot, but few have gone so far as to embed the scanner directly into the body of the machine.

　Fingerprint scanning is just the start. Aside from building in a fingerprint scanner, the notebook also ships with built-in IEEE 802.11b wireless networking gear. Also known as Wi-Fi, the technology is used for wireless networks in the office, at home, and in public places, such as airports and the occasional coffee shop, for quick and easy access to a fast Internet connection.
