New Virus Is First To Infect Linux And Windows

A newly discovered virus can infect computers using both the Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems, according to antivirus software maker Central Command.

The vendor this week said its research team discovered the virus, which is called Win32.Winux.

It’s more or less a technical-achievement virus, a proof of concept to actually try to infect both operating systems, said Steven Sundermeier, product manager at Central Command. It’s the first we know of that will infect both Windows and Linux.

Users don’t share executable files between the two operating systems, but the virus represents a technical innovation that could lead to a more destructive virus, he said. Win32.Winux does not have a destructive payload, he added.

Central Command received one report of the virus thus far. The vendor updated its antivirus software to detect it.

Unlike many of the recent VBScript viruses, Win32.Winux is more old school and does not exploit Microsoft Outlook, Sundermeier said. It infects Windows and Linux executable files.

McAfee, a Network Associates unit, rated W32.Winux as low risk.
